HELLHAMMER existierte nur zwei Jahre lang, von Mai 1982 bis Mai 1984. Während dieser Zeit schrieb die Band Material für drei Demos, eine 12-Zoll-EP und das legendäre Death Metal-Kompilationsalbum. Nach verschiedenen anfänglichen Besetzungswechseln erreichte die Band 1983 mit dem Ex-Moorhead-Schlagzeuger Bruce Day und dem ehemaligen Shizo-Bassisten Martin Eric Ain Stabilität.

Das deutsche Label Noise Records war von der ersten EP so beeindruckt, dass es HELLHAMMER einen dreijährigen Plattenvertrag anbot. Im März 1984 quartierte sich die Band in dem Caet Studio in Berlin-Kreuzberg ein und nahm vier Songs für die "Apocalyptic Raids" EP und zwei Songs für das bevorstehende Death Metal-Compilation-Album von Noise Records auf.

Die Apocalyptic Raids 12" EP war ein Paradebeispiel für HELLHAMMERS widersprüchliche Natur. Textlich, technisch und musikalisch war sie ein signifikanter Schritt nach vorn. Gleichzeitig war die EP aber auch die Antithese zu den Trends der zeitgenössischen Metal-Szene. "Apocalyptic Raids" wurde seitens der Presse aufgrund dessen hart kritisiert und im Mai 1984 verkündeten Warrior und Ain, dass HELLHAMMER seine musikalische Grenze erreicht hatte und das Konzept zu schwach war, um weiterzumachen. Der Name HELLHAMMER blieb dennoch in der extremen Metal-Szene ein großer Einfluss und die Band genießt noch heute unter Kennern des Genres Kultstatus.

"Apocalyptic Raids" entwickelte sich in den Jahren zu einem Underground-Standard, dessen Sound zwar Low-Budget, aber auch originell und kompromisslos klang. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte verhalf das Album HELLHAMMER zu einer heute mythischen Ikone des Metals, ohne dass die Band jemals ihre Musik live gespielt hat. Letztes Jahr jedoch tauchte Warrior schließlich mit seiner authentischen Hommage an HELLHAMMER und ihrer Musik auf, die ein äußerst wichtiger Teil seines Lebensweges war. “Triumph des Todes” war geboren. Benannt nach HELLHAMMERS berüchtigtem Lied, geben sie seit Sommer 2019 ausgewählte Konzerte.
